Nomads of the Steppe - Odd Fellows Film Night
Nomads of the Steppe
In a Young Democracy Surrounded by Super Powers An Ancient Culture Struggles to Survive
Trailer: https://vimeo.com/771405048
For thousands of years the nomads of Mongolia have roamed the Steppe, or high prairie, embracing a culture that includes Shamanism, Throat Singing and Naadam, the national “manly games”. Filmmaker Warren Haack has crafted a documentary that celebrates this culture, including interviews with three generations of Kazakh Eagle Hunters, a Shaman who offers her thoughts on why California is on fire, and a man who spent winter in a cave at a Buddhist Monastery to learn how to deal with his anger. Now the past is poised to catch up with the present as technology envelops this country, and young people leave the harsh nomadic lifestyle to move into town.
Come and see this “work in progress” screening at the Odd Fellows. Coastside filmmaker Warren Haack will be there to present the program and offer a Q&A session afterwards. With plans to return to Mongolia this summer to complete the project, and revisit the many friendships established over the last two trips, audience input from this single screening will play a role in further shaping the final film.
Warren is working with Wendy Lama of locally owned KarmaQuest Ecotourism and Adventure Travel in designing a trip focusing on Cultural Photography in Mongolia in the Summer of 2023.
