A Special Odd Fellows Movie Event: Jay Rosenblatt Presents 7 Short Films

Odd Fellows Lodge in Half Moon Bay is delighted to present an extraordinary evening of world-class cinema with Jay Rosenblatt on Saturday, March 30 at 7:30pm.
Jay is an internationally recognized artist who has been working as an independent filmmaker since 1980 and has completed over thirty films.
For this special Odd Fellows event, Jay will show seven of his films – ranging from 1 to 30 minutes – including a haunting documentary, an experimental film, an art film based on a poem and an elegy to a film stock. Total running time: 70 minutes
Jay’s work explores our emotional and psychological cores. Getting much of his material from found footage, Jay’s films are personal in their content yet universal in their appeal. His films have received over 100 awards and have screened throughout the world. A selection of his films had theatrical runs at the Film Forum in New York and at theaters around the country. His most recent films screened for a week at MoMA.
Eight of his films have been at the Sundance Film Festival and several of his films have shown on HBO/Cinemax, the Independent Film Channel and the Sundance Channel. Articles about his work have appeared in the Sunday NY Times Arts & Leisure section, the LA Times, the NY Times, Filmmaker magazine and the Village Voice. Jay is a recipient of a Guggenheim, USA Artists and a Rockefeller Fellowship.
Jay is originally from New York and has lived in San Francisco for many years. He is currently the Program Director of the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival. Short films
Please join us for a remarkable evening of cinema followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker.

The evening’s films include:

Nine Lives (The Eternal Moment of Now) 1 min
A house cat dreams of her past lives.
Afraid So 3 min
Afraid So is about fear and anxiety. It is based on a poem where each line forms a question with the implied response being "afraid so". Impending doom permeates the film.

The Kodachrome Elegies 11 min
Kodachrome was a film stock noted for its rich tones and vibrant colors. "The Kodachrome Elegies" is a short experimental documentary that evokes the bygone era of Kodachrome’s pinnacle. While it is a paean to this lost film stock, the film suggests the end of an era and the loss of innocence.

Human Remains 30 min
Winner of 27 Awards (including Sundance)
Human Remainsis a haunting documentary which illustrates the banality of evil by creating intimate portraits of five of the 20th century's most reviled dictators. The film unveils the personal lives of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Joseph Stalin, Francisco Franco and Mao Tse Tung. We learn the private and mundane details of their everyday lives -- their favorite foods, films, habits and sexual preferences. There is no mention of their public lives or of their place in history. The intentional omission of the horrors for which these men were responsible hovers over the film. Human Remains addresses this horror from a completely different angle. Irony and even occasional humor are sprinkled throughout the documentary. This darkly poetic film is based entirely on fact, creatively combining direct quotes and biographical research. Though based on historical figures, Human Remains is contemporary in its implications and ultimately invites the viewer to confront the nature of evil.

The D Train 5 min
An old man reflects on his entire life. How quickly it all goes by.

When You Awake 12 min
“The mind is like an iceberg, it floats with one-seventh of its bulk above water.”
–Sigmund Freud
An unscientific study of what happens when two people are hypnotized leading into an exhilarating journey into the unconscious mind (the repository for fears, desires, aggression, dreams) where
all the images, sounds and music are from found footage.

I’m Charlie Chaplin 8 min
Ella is two and a half years old. She has two great loves: Charlie Chaplin and candy. What better way to have both at once than to be The Little Tramp for Halloween? This documentary comedy revisits Ella a year later, as a more mature “Chaplin”, and the difference a year makes is remarkable.
