Where to Walk

Mom was right, a little fresh air is good for you. Whether you want to go on a hike, meander on the beach or window shop on Main Street, you’ll find plenty of options right out the front door.

The Coastal Trail offers over 11 miles to walk and you can take your leashed dog with you. Running parallel to the Pacific Coast, you’re likely to see birds in addition to beaches and bluffs. The trail is also open to bikes.

The secret to a quick and easy getaway is a midweek stay in Half Moon Bay. Visiting during the week has a number of advantages that will take your visit from good to great.

2. Dine Out

With limited seating, many restaurants get busy on the weekend. During the week, you’re more likely to find a prime spot for relaxed dining. By staying overnight, you can also pick up something special to bring to the beach or to your hotel.

A local’s favorite for tandoori dishes and dumplings called “momos” is Monsoon Himalayan Cuisine at 20 Stone Pine Road, a family owned restaurant serving specialties from Nepal. It’s currently open every day except Tuesday for take out and delivery and there are two tables set up outdoors.

Café Capistrano is a Yucatecan restaurant serving wonderful Mayan specialties as well as Mexican food and sandwiches.

Another terrific spot singled out by the Michelin guide is Cafe Capistrano at 523 Church Street. There’s a cozy outdoor patio where you can enjoy both Mexican and Mayan specialties from the Yucatan such as poc chuk, thinly sliced pork marinated in citrus and spices and sikil-pak a delicious pumpkin seed dip served with chips. It’s also a great spot for breakfast. It’s open every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner, except for Wednesdays. Call (650) 726-7699 for hours.

If you’re looking for something casual, possibly to take to the beach, check out the to go options such as 3 Pigs BBQ for plates and family meals or Spangler’s Deli for sandwiches.

3. Explore the Coast

One of the pleasures of a midweek visit, is having room to explore without the crowds. Recharge your batteries and soak up the negative ions! Head out to the harbor to see the boats and fishing activity or to some of the famous beaches. A Cozy Coastal Community

Don’t let the diminutive size of Montara fool you. What it lacks in population, it makes up with grand-scale scenery.

Engulfed by mountains and the Pacific, the cozy coastal community enjoys one of the most dramatically beautiful pockets along the Half Moon Bay Coastside. Set roughly 20 miles south of San Francisco, the quiet enclave also serves as a worthy introduction to the region’s pristine splendor for visitors fleeing urban environs. From exploring golden sand beach coves to strolling a former, cliffside stretch of Highway 1 perched high above the ocean, you’ll discover many stirring adventures in this nature-filled escape.

WHAT TO DO

Devil’s Slide Trail is a must-stop for any visitor to the Coastside. What was once a treacherous stretch of Highway 1 has been transformed into a breathtaking, 1.3-mile multi-use trail perched between towering granite cliffs and the wild Pacific. For years, the road would frequently close due to landslides, frustrating stranded commuters. Now, thanks to a pair of adjacent tunnels bored through Montara Mountain—the second and third longest tunnels in California—motorists have a reliable route, and Devil’s Slide has returned to nature. Informative signs dot the waterfront path offering insights into its fascinating natural and cultural history. The cliffside trail also provides an excellent vantage point for spotting wildlife including rare seabirds and migrating gray and humpback whales (for more local trails, see our Coastside Trail Guide).

Offering peek-a-boo views from Highway 1 above, Gray Whale Cove lures visitors with golden shores ringed by dramatic coastal cliffs. The sheltered cove is accessed by a steep trail, yet those who make the trek are rewarded with one of the most striking beaches on the Coastside. On a sunny day, you could easily mistake the setting for some far-flung Mediterranean beach. Just note that the only parking is located on the mountain side, forcing visitors to exercise extreme caution when crossing a very busy highway.

One mile south of Gray Whale Cove lies the more accessible shores of Montara State Beach. Backed by low-slung coastal bluffs, the scenic, mile-long beach attracts beachcombers, tide poolers, and wetsuit-clad surfers. On weekend mornings, you’ll see hikers heading inland toward Montara mountain which is part of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and, according to California State Parks, the only undisturbed coastal mountain habitat found within 100 miles. The 7-mile trek to the summit is a Bay Area bucket list staple thanks to top-of-the-world views enjoyed from the 1,898 foot peak.

When visitors compare the Coastside to New England, they likely have destinations such as Point Montara Lighthouse in mind. The postcard-perfect property exudes seaside charm with colorful vintage buoys, thick nautical rope strung over white picket fences, and a squat lighthouse built in 1881 and exported from the East Coast. Visitors are welcome to stroll the landscaped grounds, stopping to peer out at the vast Pacific. Plan in advance, and you can also spend the night in the former fog signal building as part of an onsite hostel.

WHERE TO EAT

Housed in an iconic building overlooking Montara Beach, La Costanera enjoys enviable views of Montara’s sweeping coastline. The multi-level dining rooms features floor-to-ceiling windows and skylights to immerse diners in the area’s coastal splendor. Plus, a heated outdoor patio provides front-row seats of the crashing surf. Translated from Spanish as “The Coast”, La Costanera serves Peruvian and Latin American-inspired dishes including seafood dishes such as Pescado a lo Macho, a stew brimming with prawns, mussels, and seasonal fish. From 5-7 p.m. every Wednesday and Thursday (and all night Tuesdays), you’ll enjoy happy hour deals on menu faves such as a seafood paella and La Costanera’s famed ceviche.

WHERE TO STAY

The Half Moon Bay Coastside has reopened for tourism, and we're thrilled to once again welcome travelers to our seaside escape. On June 17th, San Mateo County officials announced that leisure travelers can safely enjoy the Half Moon Bay Coastside's abundant hotels, restaurants, shops, and outside recreation. Visitors will find that businesses have new health and safety protocols in place according to the guidelines of the San Mateo County Health Department.

Summer Vacation is Back

With over 20 miles of stunning beaches, towering redwood forests, miles of untouched open space, and a small-town charm that feels like home, the Half Moon Bay Coastside is just the getaway you've been craving. From world-renowned luxury resorts to cozy bed and breakfasts, the area boasts accomodations for every taste and budget, all within a mile of the Pacific Ocean.

Many area restaurants have been offering outside dining options for patrons that want to eat in the open air. As of June 17th, they're cleared to allow indoor dining, with proper safety precautions, as well. The Coast is Open for Business

Most businesses on the Half Moon Bay Coastside have already reopened. “We are so happy to welcome back visitors to the Half Moon Bay Coastside,” says Krystlyn Giedt, President & CEO of the Half Moon Bay Coastside Chamber of Commerce & Visitors' Bureau. “Our businesses are very excited to serve and are committed to protecting the health and welfare of guests and our local community. We look forward to everyone being able to enjoy our beaches, farm fresh food, and array of outdoor adventure.”

Half Moon Bay's historic Main Street has a wealth of shopping opportunities. You won't find any big-box stores downtown. The many family-owned businesses offer a chance to find unique gifts you won't find anywhere else, while supporting small businesses that have been shuttered these past months.

Further north you'll find even more shops and eateries near Pillar Point Harbor, Moss Beach, and Montara. Or head south to San Gregorio and Pescadero, tiny rural hamlets that offer a glimpse into the Coastside as it was a century ago.

The Half Moon Bay Coastside is the perfect place for a romantic getaway, whether you're visiting for Valentine's day or any other time of year. Here are some of our favorite ways to spend time with the special person in your life.

stroll Along the beach

The stunning vistas of the Coastside make this an ideal spot for a long romantic walk along the water. Half Moon Bay State Beach has over 2 miles of flat sandy beaches with ample parking and easy access for all, making it a great place to feel the sand between your toes. Or explore one of a dozen other area parks, including remote pocket beaches and tide pools teeming with life.

If a walk on the beach isn't for you, you can explore miles of paved Coastal Trail on bikes instead – Bike Works and Half Moon Bay Kayak Company both have rentals available. Or head to SeaHorse Ranch and experience the beach on horseback with a guided trail ride along the blufftops and onto the beach.

Pamper Yourself

After a long walk on the beach, relax with a decadent couples massage at one of the many Coastside spas. The Beach House offers several styles of massage, as well as Reiki and Private Yoga sessions. Spa services at at the Oceano Coastal Spa include Accupressure, Tui Na, and a whole range of traditional massage techniques, as well as therapeutic baths in one of their deep-soaking tubs.

Or head to Harmonies Salon on Main Street for their Aqua Detox, a detoxification foot spa said to increase vitality and energy levels, or opt for a more traditional massage designed to meet your individual needs.

The Half Moon Bay area is home to so many great dining experiences that you're going to want to stay in town for at least a few days. If you're looking for romantic ocean views, Miramar Beach Restaurant serves up steak and seafood right on the edge of the Pacific, while Moss Beach Distillery dishes California coastal cuisine perched on a cliff above scenic Seal Cove. With Half Moon Bay's rich history of agriculture, it's no wonder the area is home to a number of vineyards, and you'll find plenty of opportunities to sip wine with your sweetheart. The drive through the redwoods to Thomas Fogarty Winery, high in the Santa Cruz Mountains above Half Moon Bay, is a fantastic day trip, and along the route, be sure to stop at the tasting room of La Nebbia, Half Moon Bay's oldest bonded winery.

In fact, Fitzgerald’s three-mile stretch of rocky coastline is considered one of the most diverse intertidal regions in California. The intertidal zone—the area of shore that’s exposed at low tide and submerged at high tide—is home to an extraordinary collection of colorful, alien-like organisms who weather harsh conditions including sweltering sun, chilly waters, and a pounding surf.

Explore its tide pools, and you might spy giant green anemones, spiky purple sea urchins, and a variety of sea stars including the otherworldly giant sunflower star. You’re also likely to see a variety of shorebirds including the black oystercatcher, and at low tide, harbor seals sunning themselves on the shore and offshore rocks. For best viewing, plan your visit at low tide which happens twice a day (you can check tide charts here). The reserve opens each morning at 8 am., and features a small parking lot. Note that groups of 15 or more are required to make a reservation by contacting the San Mateo parks department at (650) 363-4021.

Situated in the foothills above Moss Beach, this beloved horse ranch offers private, guided rides through scenic, hillside terrain with sweeping ocean vistas. Suited for beginners, all rides are preceded by a horse riding lesson from professional guides who can assess each rider’s abilities. Once geared up, guides will lead you into the adjoining, nearly 4,000 acres of countryside at Rancho Corral de Tierra, one of the largest undeveloped land parcels in the region. Today, the restaurant’s locale proves just as enviable for sipping rum as smuggling it. During the day, a sprawling, outdoor terrace fills with diners enjoying the knock-out views of Pacific and the surrounding coastline, while fire pits and blankets provide warmth into the night.

This wonderfully atmospheric mainstay features a sprawling oceanfront patio, and a racy history that extends back to the swinging days of Prohibition. Originally dubbed the Ocean Beach Hotel, the Miramar Beach Restaurant was founded as a speakeasy, slinging illegal hooch to revelers. A Local's Perspective

Since I live in Pacifica and work in Half Moon Bay, there have only been a few times that I have stayed at one of the many hotel properties in Half Moon Bay. On the evening of March 12, 2019, I was faced with staying in town when an extremely stormy night forced the closure of Highway 1.

After being turned around twice by CHP in Montara and facing wind gusts that rocked my car, I knew I had to get off the road and spend the night someplace safe, warm, and comfortable. Coastside Inn was my destination.

Upon arriving at the Coastside Inn, I was greeted in the lobby by the friendly front desk attendant, Brianne, who warmly welcomed me to the Inn and quickly found a room for me to stay. Brianne told me that she recently started working at the Inn, and based on her excellent guest service skills, I could tell she enjoys working there. After filling out the registration paperwork, I was handed my room key and wished a good night ahead. Arriving at my room, I tapped the key card to the door and settled in for the night. The room featured two standard queen beds, a writing desk area, a flat-screen TV, a coffee-machine with refrigerator, and a vanity area outside the bathroom that was stocked with H2O Therapy products. I enjoyed a good quiet night’s sleep on the comfortable bed mattresses that had wonderfully soft pillows.

Waking up in the morning and feeling refreshed, I enjoyed a hot shower using the provided H2O Therapy products (the shampoo was refreshing, and I immediately noticed the lemongrass scent!) before heading to the lobby to enjoy the breakfast buffet.

The breakfast buffet at the Coastside Inn is amazing! It’s no wonder that General Manager, Debbie Padilla, is so proud of the buffet! In the small coastal-themed breakfast area, I enjoyed hot waffle sticks, sausage, country potatoes, cold yogurt, and blueberry muffins! Eggs, cereal, and a variety of Royal Cup coffees were also available. By the time I was finished with breakfast, I was filled up for the morning at the Half Moon Bay Coastside Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau. The final stop was the front desk to return my key and be on my way!

Back in Business

After a 2-year closure for major renovations, the Ocean View Inn is back in business and the Half Moon Bay Chamber of Commerce team recently had a chance to visit the re-imagined hotel property.

Upon entering the Inn, we were welcomed with an extensive modernized look, starting with the Inn’s lobby area that is filled with light and a sense of relaxation. This area serves as a gathering space for visitors to socialize or enjoy early evening wine and hors d'oeuvres near the electric fireplace. It is also where the new breakfast bar area is located.

After climbing the Inn’s staircase, we toured 9 beautifully appointed rooms. Each room is themed to the coastal area in which it is located and features contemporary artwork and décor, adding to the relaxed ambiance of each room. All rooms are very spacious and feature hardwood floors, contemporary lighting fixtures, sofa seating areas, and comfortable bedding. Some rooms feature beautiful stain-glass windows while others offer ocean views.

All room decks have been refurbished, offering visitors the chance to enjoy the fresh ocean air from outside their rooms. The Ocean View Inn also features a restaurant next door, which helps the Inn with meals, should visitors want to enjoy a meal in their room. Sidewalks in front of the property have been repaired and new landscaping has been planted.
