Fitzgerald Marine Preserve in Moss Beach. Head online first to download maps and guides to the area. You can also watch a video (below) in preparation for your visit, that will give you a peek at the kinds of starfish, sea urchins, anemones, limpets, hermit crabs, harbor seals, eels, birds and maybe even an octopus you’re likely to see.

Nature Walk

Local insiders Melissa Rey of Inn at Mavericks and Shelly Auyeung the communications manager of The Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay both recommend Purisima Creek Redwoods Preserve as a favorite spot for a hike. Some of the oldest trees in the world, redwoods were the dominant trees in the Northern hemisphere when dinosaurs roamed thousands of years ago. A great pick for the whole family, the quarter mile nature walk is a flat and easy stroll through a shady second-growth redwood forest with trees that are over 100 years old. It’s just off Skyline Blvd, and has wheelchair-accessible picnic tables and a restroom.

Hiking in the Purisima Creek Redwoods Preserve. It does not matter what age you are it will put a huge smile on your face!” It’s hard to resist the charm of the goats and their babies at Harley Farms and no matter when you visit, you’re likely to get up close and personal with the inquisitive and friendly herd, along with the guardian llamas, Anatolian shepherds, barn kitties, British White cattle, Iz the pig, and Rosie the donkey. While formal ticketed tours are not recommended for the youngest children, unscheduled visits for exploring on your own are highly encouraged. Picnic tables around the pond are a great spot for enjoying the outdoors or just taking a snack break and do make a stop at the farm store to pick up some farm fresh cheese. The farm is open daily to visitors from 11- 4pm.

Another good option for getting up close and personal with animals is the petting zoo at Lemos Farm. For a dollar you can purchase a cup of food and hand feed the animals including baby goats, pigs, sheep, and bunnies. It’s fun for the kids and a truly great picture taking opportunity for the rest of the family.

Entertainment in Town

Back in town, add Make It Main Street to your calendar. It runs from July 1 - November 4, the first Thursdays of the month from 3-7 p.m. It’s a brand new monthly event that takes place on five blocks of Main Street. Your whole family will be entertained by a rotating array of musicians, artists, storytellers, and poets plus a woodworker, a letterpress artist, sculptor, a guitar-builder, and a glassblower. Head to Mac Dutra Park for performances from local writers, poets, essayists and storytellers and check out locally produced short films at the Oddfellows Hall throughout the evening.

Sun, 27 Jun 2021 19:17:16 +0000 kevin 3010 at https://www.visithalfmoonbay.org Exploring Devil’s Slide and Highway One https://www.visithalfmoonbay.org/discover/articles/exploring-devils-slide-and-highway-one-walk-pacific-coast-highway

Walk the Pacific Coast Highway

One of the most dramatic and scenic stretches of the Pacific Coast Highway, full of winding curves on the edge of the cliffs overlooking the shoreline, was once known for landslides, hence the name “Devil’s Slide.”

Today, Devil’s Slide is no longer so “devilish.” Instead it’s a serene and spectacular path for communing with nature, seeing wildlife, feeling the sea breezes, and enjoying the beauty of the coastline.

History of Devil’s Slide

Devil’s Slide, completed in 1937, was particularly treacherous, due to road collapses and accidents. It was also the location of a military triangulation station and observation site used during World War II as part of the harbor and coastline defense of San Francisco. As early as 1940 the road had to be closed due to erosion and in 1995 the road was closed to traffic for almost 6 months. During that closure locals discovered what a stunning spot it was for enjoying nature. In 2013 Caltrans shut down the coastal road and opened up a tunnel for cars instead. Now the almost 1 1/2 mile trail is the only spot along the Pacific Coast Highway where you can walk with no cars.

Practical Information

Today the Devil’s Slide Trail is part of the San Mateo Parks system and is very accessible, with parking lots at both the north and south end. On the south side there are actually two parking lots. The parking is limited though, so getting there early especially on the weekend is important. There are bathrooms, a water fountain and garbage and recycling. The pathway is fairly wide and there are lanes for bikes and for those on foot. Equestrians are allowed, though the paved road may not be ideal for horses. The path is wide and not very steep, so it is great for all levels of fitness. Bring a windbreaker or jacket in case the wind picks up, a hat to protect you from the sun, comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots and binoculars, if you have them. You may also want to bring a camera to capture the stunning views.

The pathway is fairly wide and there are lanes for bikes and for those on foot.

What You’ll See

It’s hard to imagine that the trail used to be a section of highway. It’s quiet and features gorgeous views of the ocean, with a backdrop of the cliffs and bluffs. Interpretive panels offer information about the history, geology and wildlife along the way. Birdwatchers take note: some of the birds you may see include pelicans, peregrine falcons, pigeon guillemots who nest in the cliffs, Brandt’s cormorants diving in the ocean and western gulls. Keep your eyes open for whales and seals too.

Depending upon the season, the landscape may be speckled with colorful wildflowers including California sagebrush, gum plants, blue blossom ceanothus and lizardtail, also known as seaside woolly sunflower.

Montara State Beach and McNee Ranch

A great spot to stop for a little beach time is Montara State Beach, just past the south end of the trail. Popular for beachcombers, surf fishers and tide pool exploring, the mile long beach has plenty of parking and restrooms. Dogs are allowed on leash.

Across from the beach is McNee Ranch; state park land within Montara State Beach which has several hiking trails and view trails. There are 3 trails rated “moderate”which range from a little over 3 miles to 7 miles and from 78 feet to 1,886 feet above sea level.

Food & Drink

Just about 15 minutes down the road from Devil’s Slide is Moss Beach Distillery. A landmark spot set back from the road overlooking a beautiful beach cove, it is a relaxing place with a patio where you can soak in more ocean views and enjoy a prohibition era cocktail after your hike. In addition to a full bar, the menu features plenty of seafood including clam chowder, oysters on the half shell and fish and chips. Originally opened in 1927, famed mystery writer Dashiell Hammett not only spent time here, but used it as a setting for one of his short detective stories, “The Girl with the Silver Eyes.” Rumored to be haunted by a ghost, it is a truly haunting spot.

Sat, 08 May 2021 21:48:47 +0000 kevin 2984 at https://www.visithalfmoonbay.org Workcation in Half Moon Bay https://www.visithalfmoonbay.org/discover/articles/workcation-half-moon-bay-getaway-thats-not-too-far-away

A Getaway That's Not Too Far Away

There’s a lot to be said for a change of scenery and the Half Moon Bay Coastside is famous for beautiful scenery.

Anyone who has taken a day off work knows that just getting out of your usual routine can help to relieve stress, so when a true vacation is out of the question, consider the benefits of a workcation. Bird watchers have spotted 458 different species in the area, representing almost half of the 1,000 species that live in the continental United States. Pillar Point Harbor, Pescadero Marsh, and Burleigh Murray Ranch State Park are especially popular spots. Great Blue Herons, Brown Pelicans, and Western Gulls can be seen in abundance, but you might also spy rarities like Ross's Gull or the Red-Footed Booby.

Bird watchers have spotted 458 different species on the Coastside.

Go Out on the Water

Charter boats out of Pillar Point Harbor take visitors out to sea for sportfishing, whale watching, tours, and even the occasional wedding ceremony. A day out on a vessel like the Huli Cat, Riptide, Queen of Hearts, or Ankeny Street is a great way to experience the open ocean. Or if you'd prefer to captain your own ship, closer to shore, a rented kayak from Half Moon Bay Kayak Company allows you to have a whole boat to yourself.

Charter boats in Pillar Point Harbor

Fish from the Jetty

Fishing from a boat is just one way to catch your limit, but many people prefer to fish from the jetty that separates the harbor from the open ocean. And because it's considered a public pier, you can fish off the jetty without a California fishing license (all other angling rules still apply).

Fishing from the jetty at sunset.

Catch a Wave

Half Moon Bay has become synonymous with big-wave surfing, but the waters around Surfer's Beach produce more modest waves that appeal to a broader audience. Unless you're an experienced surfer, though, you're going to want to stick to the waters just south of the harbor, and leave the huge breaks like Mavericks to the professional surfers. If a bigger board is more your style, rent a stand-up paddleboard - the calm waters of the inner harbor are an ideal place to learn to SUP.

A surfer rides the waves at Surfer's Beach

Explore the Harbor

Walk down Johnson Pier, where you can buy freshly-caught fish right off the boats. Pillar Point Harbor is also home to small shops; stock up on surfing gear and apparel at Mavericks Surf Shop and The Surf Factory, then check out the coastal chic gifts at Nasturtium. And of course you'll find fresh-as-it-gets seafood at a number of fantastic restaurants (see them all in our dining directory).

A bird's-eye view of Pillar Point Harbor

Stroll Down Historic Main Street

Skip the malls and head to Half Moon Bay's charming downtown. The trees that line Main Street are decked out in dazzling lights and many stores stay open late so you can do some holiday shopping as well. There's also a tree lighting ceremony in Mac Dutra Park, carolers and other music, and the beloved Parade of Lights down Main Street.

Then, on the following night, the Pillar Point Harbor Lighted Boat Festival invites locals and visitors alike to stroll along Pillar Point Harbor to view boats festively adorned with holiday lights and other trimmings. The best decorated boat will be chosen in the Annual Boat Decorating Contest. If you want to catch both nights (and you should) stay the night with one of our local lodgers.

Revelers roast chestnuts at the annual Night of Lights event in Half Moon Bay.

Cut Your Own Christmas Tree

Some call Half Moon Bay the Pumpkin Capital of the World, but after those gigantic gourds are gone, agriculture of the evergreen variety takes the spotlight. Sure, you can pick up a pre-cut tree almost anywhere this time of year, but the tree farms in Half Moon Bay offer families a chance to choose and cut their own tree just like in the old days. It's a family outing you won't soon forget, and Half Moon Bay is one of the few places in the Bay Area where you can still cut your own tree.

Tree farms in Half Moon Bay offer a chance to cut your own Christmas Tree.

However you celebrate, winter in Half Moon Bay is a magical time of year. For a truly amazing experience, visit mid-week when everyone else is at work — there's nothing quite like the feel of having a beach all to yourself for a winter stroll, and Half Moon Bay's mild climate means outdoor activities are on the menu year round, although you'll probably prefer to enjoy the beach in a sweater rather than a swimsuit during the winter.
