Usually, guests are accommodated in private bedrooms with private bathrooms, or in a suite of rooms including an in-suite bathroom. Some homes have private bedrooms with a bathroom which is shared with other guests. Breakfast is served in the bedroom, a dining room, or the host’s kitchen.
Many B&Bs in the United States try to create a historical ambiance, with old properties turned into guesthouses decorated with antique furniture. Others are constructed new with a particular ambiance befitting the location.
Bed & Breakfast History
There are regional differences world-wide, but in the US B&Bs date back to the early days of Colonial America. There were few lodging locations and traveler relied on strangers to provide a bed for the night. During the Great Depression travelers stopped at homes with signs reading Tourists or Guests, and after WWII travelers began to experience Eurpoean-style B&B’s and brought back their traditions. This coincided with an increasing interest in historic preservation so many houses become B&Bs.
Through the 1980s and 1990s the numbers grew quickly, from home-style with shared baths and simple furnishing to renovated historic mansions and elegant furnishings. The Internet became a major marketing force in the 1990s and is not a major way people find unique and special lodging locations throughout the US.
