Renowned surfing legend Peter Mel and his family were on site for the opening of Chasing Mavericks. The film stars Gerard Butler and tells the true story of young Jay Moriarity (played by newcomer Jonny Weston) and his courageous challenge of the surf. During the course of Jay Moriarty’s rigorous training, the two develop a strong bond over their love of the surf and its personal meaning.
Chasing Mavericks is a compelling drama centered on the famous break just north of Half Moon Bay, so it is no surprise to see the twice crowned Big Wave World Champion in attendance. Peter Mel was also involved in the first (and several subsequent) competition at Mavericks in 1999… but his wife and son also surf?
