The revitalized Johnny’s in downtown Half Moon Bay weaves a rich tapestry of history, community, and culinary artistry. Tracing its origins back to the 1960s under the stewardship of Half Moon Bay residents John and Fiorina Evan, the restaurant began as a classic diner named Original Johnny’s after its founder. It became a beloved local institution under the watchful eyes of their son Steve Evan and his wife Ilva, particularly renowned for its pies.

After a period of closure and change in ownership, the torch has been passed to Betsy del Fierro, a long-time local and an admirer of the diner’s community spirit. Del Fierro, who has been successfully running It’s Italia since 1997, took over Johnny’s with a vision of honoring its legacy while infusing it with a modern touch. The challenge of managing two establishments has been offset by the close proximity of the eateries on Main Street and the shared resources they offer.

Del Fierro’s family plays a pivotal role in the restaurant’s operations, with her husband and daughters actively involved, ensuring the legacy of family-run businesses continues. The menu at Johnny’s is a thoughtful blend of new creations and classic dishes from the original diner, including lemon ricotta pancakes and chilaquiles for breakfast, and a variety of comforting lunch options. True to the diner’s heritage, the dessert menu features rotating pie flavors in homage to Ilva Evan.

Sustainability and community connection are at the heart of Johnny’s ethos. The diner sources its produce from local farms, ensuring fresh ingredients that support the local economy. The redesigned space by Kristi Will retains elements of the past while introducing modern design touches, like the blue mosaic tiling and custom wallpaper, creating a setting that is both nostalgic and contemporary.

Johnny’s is set to become a hub for community engagement and a testament to the enduring spirit of Half Moon Bay’s rich history, honoring the past while looking forward to a new chapter in the diner’s storied legacy.
