Led by bassist Marcus Shelby, this Nonet will perform a special program titled “Birth of the Cool Revisited”, which will be music performed in its original instrumentation from the groundbreaking Miles Davis recording “Birth of the Cool” (1949). The program will also feature a suite of original compositions by Marcus Shelby inspired by the compositions on “Birth of the Cool”. The Marcus Shelby Nonet consist of 9 San Francisco Bay Area Master Musicians, including Mike Olmos (trumpet), Joel Behrman (trombone), Tony Peebles (alto sax), Melecio Magdulyo (baritone sax), Greg Jacobs (piano), Jemal Ramirez (drums), and Marcus Shelby (bass/conductor). These artists are part of the Marcus Shelby New Orchestra, which has 5 recordings released and performs regularly throughout Northern California. “The Birth of the Cool Revisited” is the inaugural performance of the nonet leading up to a year-long celebration of trumpeter Miles Davis in 2026.
