Chasing Mavericks

Half Moon Bay is remarkable for many qualities from its art scene to wineries and natural beauty. It is also one of the most impressive surf destinations of America, the Mavericks surf break. This autumn, Mavericks will be the focus of a film dedicated to that area and two men in particular who braved the waves there. Chasing Mavericks, is the invigorating true story of young Jay Moriarity and his search for the biggest wave. His journey brings him to Frosty Hesson who reluctantly takes the lad in to transform him into a professional surfer. Star of the hit film 300 and Gamer, Gerard Butler plays the role of the father figure Hesson who helps Moriarty through his personal realization into adulthood.

Directed by Michael Apted (Gorillas in the Mist) from a script by Kario Salem (The Score), Chasing Mavericks is based on the world famous west coast waves of Half Moon Bay. The contest held annually has attracted surf enthusiasts from all over the country. The story of Chasing Mavericks isn’t just about the surf but one of the human spirit as well. Despite extensive training, both Jay Moriarity and Frosty Hesson challenge the odds when they take their boards to the ocean. While Chasing Mavericks tells of the deep bond between Moriarty and Hesson, it is also one based on fact. After braving the waves for years, Jay Moriarty died under the Indian Ocean while meditating on the ocean floor. His accomplishments as a soul surfer and his love for Mavericks in particular was celebrated in a book on surfing co-authored shortly before his death. The film Chasing Mavericks captures the attraction and danger of the waves that dare athletes from all over the globe with spectacular visuals. Chasing Mavericks will be released on October 26, 2012.
