Chasing Mavericks, the motion picture based on the life of surfing legends Jay Moriarity and Rick Hesson, is drawing media attention to Half Moon Bay, CA. Blockbuster Film Starring Gerard Butler Opens in Theaters Nationwide October 26

HALF MOON BAY, CA ‘ OCTOBER 17, 2012 – Half Moon Bay, CA is getting a taste of Hollywood with the release of the biographical film ‘Chasing Mavericks’ starring Gerard Butler, Jonny Weston and Elisabeth Shue. Based on the life of beloved surfing legend Jay Moriarity and his friendship with his mentor and local legend Rick ‘Frosty’ Hesson, ‘Chasing Mavericks’ is an inspirational true story set in Half Moon Bay featuring the world famous Mavericks surfing spot and the stunning scenery of this coastal town located just 40 minutes south of San Francisco.

With a $25 million budget, this Twentieth Century Fox film was co-directed by Curtis Hanson and Michael Apted. The story follows the life of Jay Moriarty, who at just 15 years old discovers that the mythic Mavericks surf break, one of the biggest waves on Earth, exists just miles from his nearby home. He enlists the help of Rick ‘Frosty’ Hesson to train him to ride it, and as they embark on their quest to accomplish the impossible, they form a unique friendship that transforms both their lives, and their mission to tame Mavericks becomes far more than surfing.

Half Moon Bay is home to the world-famous surfing spot Mavericks, located one-half mile off the coast by Pillar Point Harbor. It is considered one of the most challenging surfing areas in the world, attracting the most elite surfers to brave the waves. The Mavericks Surf Contest, which can take place anytime between November 1 through March 31 (depending upon wave patterns), attracts 24 of the world’s greatest big-wave surfers who come to Half Moon Bay on just 24 hours notice to vie for the highly sought-after 2012/2013 Mavericks Surf Contest, title and a large cash prize.
