In October 1998, Matthew Shepard, a 21-year-old gay college student, was attacked and left to die outside Laramie, Wyoming. The Laramie Project draws on hundreds of interviews conducted with residents of the town in the weeks and months that followed. Those voices build into a portrait of a community working through what happened, and of a country reckoning with hate and grief at the same time. It remains one of the most performed plays in American theater.
